| Setting | Purpose |
|---|---|
motd | The text shown under the server name in the multiplayer list. |
max-players | The number of slots. Setting it high does not make the server more capable: plan the resources to match. |
view-distance | The number of chunks sent to players. It is one of the settings that weighs most on the server. |
simulation-distance | The distance at which entities and mechanisms stay active around players. |
online-mode | Checks accounts with Mojang. Leave it on for a public server. |
white-list | Reserves the server for players you add with /whitelist add. |
server-port | The connection port, 25565 by default. If it changes, players must include it in the address. |
Place the file at the root of your server folder, replacing the existing one, then restart the server. This file is not suitable as it stands for a Bedrock server, whose settings are different.
Frequently asked questions
What you need to know
Where is the server.properties file?
At the root of your Minecraft Java server folder, next to server.jar. It is created at first startup: replace it with this file, then restart the server.
Is my information sent anywhere?
No. The file is built in your browser with JavaScript. Nothing you enter is sent to NVHCloud.
Should I leave online-mode on?
Yes, on a public server. It checks accounts with Mojang. Turning it off lets anyone connect under any username, administrators included.
Which view distance should I choose?
A distance of 10 suits most servers. Lower it if the server is short of resources: it is one of the settings that weighs most on the processor and memory.
