What changes compared with free hosting
Free bot hosting is fine for testing. Once your community relies on the bot, its limits become a problem: sleep mode, shared resources and restarts you do not control.
A VPS keeps the bot connected to Discord permanently. A bot connects outward to the gateway, so you normally have no port to open, which keeps the setup simple.
Keep your token out of your code and back up your database regularly. If your bot grows, you can move to a larger plan from your client area.
