Two Windows VPS plans advertised at the same price can cost very different amounts by the end of the month. The licence may be charged separately, the price may assume a two-year commitment, or one provider may show prices before tax and another after tax. Here is the checklist to compare fairly, including our own offer.
1. The comparison checklist
| Criterion | Question to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Windows licence | Included or a paid add-on? | Often the main gap between the advertised price and what you pay. |
| Commitment | Is the price monthly, or based on 12 or 24 months? | A headline price may assume a long commitment. |
| Tax | Before or after tax? | Bring every offer back to the same basis. |
| Renewal | Does the price change after the first period? | An introductory offer does not always last. |
| Setup fee | Is there one? | It weighs on a small plan, especially over a short period. |
| RAM and vCPU | How much do your programs need? | Windows uses more than Linux, so the minimum shown may not be comfortable. |
| Storage | NVMe or SSD? How much is left after Windows? | Windows takes up a good part of a small disk. |
| Location | Where is the server? | It determines latency, especially to a broker or your users. |
| Access | RDP with administrator rights? | Without them, you cannot install all your software. |
| Network protection | Is Anti-DDoS included? | An add-on changes the real price. |
| Support | Which channels, language and hours? | It matters during an outage, never before. |
2. Working out the real monthly price
Bring each offer back to one formula:
(server price + licence + essential add-ons) × term + setup fee
---------------------------------------------------------------
term in months
Do the calculation over the same term and on the same tax basis for every provider. Two examples from public pages, checked on 4 November 2026, show why:
- Contabo states that its displayed price is the effective monthly rate on a 24-month term, and that Windows Server is available as a paid add-on.
- OVHcloud shows its entry-level VPS both before and after tax: compare like with like.
These terms change: check them on the day you order, in the checkout rather than on the home page.
3. Which configuration to compare
| Use | RAM to compare | vCPU |
|---|---|---|
| Light software, scheduled task | 2 GB | 2 |
| Remote desktop, 1 to 3 MetaTrader terminals | 4 GB | 2 |
| Several accounts, NinjaTrader, modest SQL server | 8 GB | 4 |
| Business applications, several heavy programs | 16 GB and more | 6 and more |
Compare identical configurations: a lower price on 2 GB says nothing about the gap on 8 GB.
4. The most common traps
- The price without Windows: the page says VPS, but the operating system is chosen later and added to the bill.
- An unprotected RDP port: check you can filter access, and use a long password.
- Simultaneous connections: Windows Server allows two remote connections without extra licences. Beyond that, you need the Session Host role and RDS client licences.
- The default location: the country shown on the page is not always available for Windows.
5. Our offer against the same checklist
| Criterion | NVHCloud Windows VPS |
|---|---|
| Windows licence | Included, Windows Server 2019 or 2022 |
| Commitment | None, billed monthly; 20% off when billed yearly |
| Tax | Prices shown before tax |
| Storage and processor | NVMe, Intel Xeon |
| Access | RDP, administrator rights, dedicated IPv4 |
| Anti-DDoS | GCore, included |
| Location | France only, in Paris (Digital Realty PAR6) |
Our clearest limit is location: if your broker or users are far from Paris, a provider in the right region may suit you better. Current prices are on the Windows VPS page, and remote access details on RDP VPS.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most important criterion when comparing Windows VPS plans?
The real monthly price, licence included, over the same commitment and on the same tax basis. Then check that the RAM suits your software and the location is right.
Is the Windows licence always included?
No. Some providers include it, others offer it as a paid add-on. Check the total in the checkout.
How much RAM do I need for a Windows VPS?
4 GB suits remote desktop and a few MetaTrader terminals. Allow 8 GB and more for several programs or NinjaTrader.
Is a cheaper Windows VPS necessarily worse?
Not necessarily, but a low price can hide a paid licence, a long commitment or few resources. Compare identical configurations before concluding.
